October is the official Breast Cancer Awareness month and this year there are more ways than for you to get behind this wonderful cause and support raising breast cancer awareness. We’ve put together a list of ways you can help raise breast cancer awareness, not only for this October but for life.

  1. Get To Know Your Breasts!

First and foremost you MUST regularly check your breasts for any lumps, bumps or abnormalities; which we know is easier said than done, especially when you don’t know what you’re looking for. We have created an infographic to help you understand more about breast cancer, our step-by-step guide will not only show you exactly what to look for when examining your breasts but also how to examine your breasts correctly. Once you have mastered the breast examination make sure you share our infographic across social media and join us on our mission to increase breast cancer awareness by using the hashtag #BreastCancerAwareness

REMEMBER

Every year approximately 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK, that’s equivalent to one person every 10 minutes. 1 in 8 women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime – Breast cancer is the second most common cause of death from cancer in women in the UK.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month - Let's Hear It For The Boobs!

A devastating 12,000 people die from breast cancer in the UK every year – It is important to remember that breast cancer also affects men, whilst rare, around 400 men are diagnosed each year.

There are three main risk factors:

  1. 1. Gender – women have the highest risk factor of developing breast cancer.

  2. 2. Age – The older the person the higher the risk, more than 80% of breast cancers occur in women over 50. Most men who get diagnosed with breast cancer are over 60.

     3. Family History – Although this isn’t common, around 5% of people diagnosed with breast cancer have inherited a faulty BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene.

We appreciate these statistic might be a scary thought to some but, more than 8 out 10 (85%) of people survive breast cancer beyond 5 years and with your help we hope to see these numbers rise and to have more people surviving breast cancer every year. Please share your newfound knowledge with your friends and family and together we can beat cancer!
