Male Breast Removal Surgery

Some men have mild breast-like chest tissue: known as gynaecomastia or "man boobs", this can be extremely embarrassing. In the vast majority of cases, this occurs from childhood onwards and affects both sides of the chest: this is due to mild breast development in a man and is normal. However, if you have newly developed this condition or it affects only one side you should see your GP.

The development of gynaecomastia is very embarrassing and in most cases cannot be removed, even through diet and exercising - and often surgery is the most suitable option.

What is involved?

Male breast development can occur in varying severities. Mild conditions can be treated with liposuction, and more severe cases with a type of operation, which is mostly done though a small incision around the nipple. These patients have an excellent improvement in the gynaecomastia and a very inconspicuous scar.

When more severe male breast development needs correction more noticeable scars may be produced – this is rare.

Am I suitable for a male breast removal?

Patients who have longstanding male breast development can benefit from male breast removal. If only one side is affected or if the condition has just started you should first go and see your doctor for a medical opinion before arranging for a consultation.

What are the scars like?

In most cases the plastic surgery is carried out using very little scarring, and these scars tend to settle well. Only on rare occasions is it required to leave long scars on the chest

How is the procedure performed?

This depends on the amount of extra tissue you have. In many cases liposuction may be used alone or in combination with an incision around the nipple. In more severe cases a scar may be left on the chest.

What happens after the surgery?

In most cases you will have a small drain which is removed the day after your surgery and you will be allowed home. You will be given a tight vest to wear to help mould the new chest and this should be worn day and night for 4 weeks, however swelling is common after the operation and the new result will not be seen for 3 months or so. You will be able to go back to a deck job after 2 weeks but should refrain from physical activity or exercise for 6 weeks

Your new look

Having male breasts can be very embarrassing and having them removed can greatly increase your self esteem and confidence. It is extremely rare for the condition to recur. In most cases the results are very good but some minor contour abnormalities are common, although the breasts will still have an improved appearance.
