Macrolane Breast Enlargement

Macrolane – The ‘lunchtime boob jab’

Macrolane is a new product which can be used for breast enlargement, buttock enlargement and filling of skin indentations. It has been available in the UK for a couple of years and is widely used around the World. It has been seen in many women’s magazines as the latest Hollywood treatment

What is Macrolane?

Macrolane is a form of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is the same compound found in popular fillers such as Restylane and Perlane and is made by the same manufacturer QMed. The hyaluronic acid is thicker in Macrolane and lasts longer, up to a year, than other fillers. The substance has safely been used as filler for more than ten years and is very similar to the hyaluronic acid found naturally in the body. Once in the body the Macrolane degrades naturally and needs to be topped up at a year.

What can be treated with Macrolane?

The most popular indication for Macrolane is for breast enlargement, although buttock shaping and calf shaping can also be done. It can also fill indentations in the skin caused by scarring or liposuction

How much improvement is possible?

This depends on how much breast tissue you have to start with. For small breasted ladies an improvement of up to 1 ½ cup sizes is possible. Older ladies and those with larger breasts get more cleavage after the procedure and about a 1 cup size enlargement.

How is the treatment carried out?

You attend a clinic where you are given an injection of local anaesthetic into the breast. A small hole is made, about 4mm in diameter on the fold under the breast and the Macrolane is injected into a space under the breast. The incision is then closed with a dissolving stitch and a dressing applied. The procedure takes about an hour and the improvement is immediate.

What can go wrong?

In a very small number of women the Macrolane is broken down quicker by the body and the results only last 6 months. Of this occurs QMed will pay for a further treatment to be carried out. Sometimes the Macrolane can cause lumpiness to the breast but in most cases this can be corrected in the clinic.

How long does the improvement last?

Typically the treatment is best repeated (at reduced cost) at a year. If you decide not to get further Macrolane done then the product dissolves away leaving no lasting effects in most cases.

Who is this best for?

Any woman who would like larger breasts is suitable for Macrolane. Typically women who would like larger breasts but do not want to undergo an operation to have silicone breast implants would be ideal for Macrolane. Also, women with a special event coming up, for example a Wedding or Beach holiday would also be ideal candidates.
